A Harm Reduction Approach to Eating Disorder Therapy

At SpringSource: Eating, Weight & Mood Disorders, we understand that recovery is not one-size-fits-all.

Many individuals seeking eating disorder therapy are not ready, or do not feel able, to pursue full behavioral change right away. Others may have tried more rigid approaches in the past and found them unsustainable.

A harm reduction approach recognizes that meaningful progress can begin before full recovery feels possible.

Rather than requiring immediate elimination of all eating disorder behaviors, harm reduction focuses on:

  • increasing safety and medical stability
  • reducing the frequency or intensity of behaviors
  • building awareness of emotional and behavioral patterns
  • developing alternative coping strategies over time
  • strengthening the therapeutic relationship as a foundation for change

Harm reduction is not about giving up on recovery. It is about creating a pathway into it.

Many traditional treatment models emphasize full abstinence from behaviors. While that approach can be effective for some, it is not the only path to healing.

At SpringSource, we meet you where you are while holding a clear commitment to your health, well-being, and long-term healing. For many people, harm reduction often allows therapy to feel more accessible, less overwhelming, and ultimately more effective.

You can learn more about this approach in our article on harm reduction for eating disorders.

Signs You May Benefit from Eating Disorder Therapy

If you are experiencing any of the following concerns, therapy may be a helpful next step:

  • persistent thoughts about food or weight
  • cycles of restriction or binge eating
  • anxiety around meals
  • body image distress
  • emotional eating patterns
  • feeling out of control around food, even when you are trying to “do better”
  • a sense that your relationship with food or your body is taking up more space than you want it to in your daily life
